Great story! Anyone who talks bad about Yugo ignores simple facts of what market it was built for. Even as cheap as it was, it still cost a pretty penny in Yugoslavia, and it was way better and larger than Fio (zastava 750). But, It was way cheaper than a Golf I, even the Sarajevo TAS built one - not to mention the real German ones. It could be fixed with a pair of pliers and two screwdrivers by the side of the road. It drove fast enough for crappy roads that were available at the time. It was also surprisingly reliable, and while far from a good quality car, it would get you from a to b. We had a zastava 750, then a Yugo and lastly a Zastava 101 Skala (basically a FIAT 128). They were good enough for the time and our budget.

Of course, selling them in USA was idiotic.
